The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

Based on a true story, this beautifully written novel tells the story of the Auschwitz prisoner Lale Solokov who was forced to tattoo each inmate with their identification number. Whilst working in the camp, Lale falls in love with a fellow prisoner – what follows is a a beautiful story of survival and ultimate redemption.


On the Bright Side by Hendrik Groen

On the Bright Side’ is the sequel to the much loved Book Club classic ‘The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen’. Hendrik is now 85, but is still facing his remaining years with the same optimism and enthusiasm. This is a quirky, wonderful and life affirming look at growing old, funny and warm in equal measure.


A Long Way From Home by Peter Carey

Set in the 1950s against the backdrop of the ‘Redex’ 10K car race across Australia, this tells the story of a couple who stumble upon a burial site of a massacre of Aboriginal Australians years earlier. Their discovery unveils a series of shocking truths about Australia’s recent past, and causes them to question their own identity. A stunning return to form for Peter Carey.


The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar

A rich and original work of historical fiction set in England at the end of the eighteenth century, this debut novel tells the story of a merchant who has traded his ship for a mermaid.  The beautiful writing within this details a rich and vivid portrait of Georgian London, and it’s a brilliant, original and captivating read.
