The Spelling Bee Team were delighted to be back in Belfast this past week for the last provincial final of this year’s competition. The Ulster final was held in our Eason Donegall Place, Belfast store and we were delighted to be joined by Cool FM’s Rebecca McKinney.

We were delighted to welcome our 9 amazing county champions to the store who were eager to be crowned this year’s Ulster Champion, they were;

Roan McIntosh from St. Patrick’s Primary School, Castlewellan, Co. Down

Maeve Fegan from St. John’s Primary School, Moy, Co. Tyrone

Grace Hanratty from Scoil na gCailini, Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan

 Rachel McIntyre from Termoncanice Primary School, Limavady, Co. Derry

 Ciara Gilmore from Scoil Phadraig, Rashenny, Co. Donegal

 Laoise McManus from St. Ninnidh’s Primary School, Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh

 Lois Angell from Groggan Primary School, Randalstown, Co. Antrim

 Rian McGeown from St. Mary’s Primary School, Derrytrasna, Co. Armagh

 Paraic Clerkin from Kill National School, Cootehill, Co. Cavan

The atmosphere in the store was electric and all of our spellers received a rapturous round of applause before the competition began and it was well deserved.

After some impressive spelling from our participants, it was Rian McGeown who was crowned the Eason Spelling Bee Ulster Champion 2017.

Ulster Winning Word: Misjoinder

Definition: The improper joining of parties as coplaintiffs or codefendants or of different causes of action in one suit.

Rian will now go on to represent his school, county and province in the All Ireland Spelling Bee Final which takes place on the 20th June in Croke Park.

We would also like to give a massive thank you to Jonathan Johnston (Area Manager NI), Maureen McPoland & Susan Kelly (Management Team Eason Donegall Place) who made everyone involved feel very welcome in their store and let us use their wonderful space for their event.

There’s even more excitement growing as we head towards our All – Ireland final next.
