Spelling Bee 2018: Mayo, Galway, Clare & Limerick
Our Spelling Bee Team began their week in Connaught. As everyone arrived back to school after their Easter Break, our team began their week in Mayo. Four county finals took place this week between Mayo, Galway, Clare and Limerick. The spellers all battled it out against each other to become the County Spelling Bee winner. The team were really looking forward to seeing what was in store for them in these four competitions. Check out all the details from their time on the road below and find out which of our superb spellers were crowned Mayo, Galway, Clare and Limerick Spelling Bee County champions.
Our first competition of the week kicked off in Castlebar. There were 25 spellers who went head to head at the County Final on Monday. The final was hosted by St Patrick’s Boys National School in Castlebar.
The winner was Shane Fleming from Lisaniska National School. Shane is in 6th class, 12 years old and is always reading. His favourite authors are Derek Landy and Philip Pullman. Shane will now go on to represent the County in the Regional Final in May.
On April 10th our team were in Galway for our second biggest county final of the competition to date this year. 42 spellers from across the county spelt it out against each other to become the Galway champion.
Our Galway Spelling Bee winner was Holly Shaughnessy from Crumlin National School, Ballyglunin, Tuam. Holly’s favourite author is JK Rowling. She will now move on to represent the county in the Regional Final in May.
Our third competition of the week was held in Ennis Co.Clare. The competition was hosted by Ennis National School, Ashline. The atmosphere was great in the school and a great competition began at 11 am. 15 spellers took part in the competition.
Our Clare County Spelling Bee winner was Hannah Moroney from Convent Primary School, Killaloe. Hannah loves reading and her favourite author is Rick Riordan. Hannah will now go on to represent the county in the Munster Final in May.
For the final County Final in Munster the team were in Limerick. Here our competition was hosted by JFK Memorial School. The atmosphere filled the hall and a great competition kicked off shortly after 11 am. The standard was great. 20 spellers from across the county battled against each other to be named the Limerick County Champion.
Peadar O Cearmada from An Mhodhscoil was our winning Bee. Peadar was presented with his County Spelling Bee medal and certificate by Nora Shine, Manager of Eason Crescent Shopping Centre. Peadar is an avid reader and has just finished ‘How to train your dragon’ for the sixth time. Peadar will now go on to represent the county in the Munster Final in May.
